Witches Hat Strainer Flow Direction

Witches hat strainers, also called temporary filters or cone strainers, are installed upstream of pumps and other equipment in the piping system.

Witches hat strainers remove unwanted debris and impurities from the process stream, preventing damage to sensitive system equipment.

There are three types of temporary strainers: witches hat strainers (temporary cone filters).

Witches hat strainers are named after their cone shape. They are usually used temporarily during the piping system's initial startup phase.

We can custom design witches hat strainers with various structures and types, including single-layer woven wire mesh, single-layer perforated plate, combination of wire mesh and perforated plate, pleated mesh and sintered mesh, etc.

Witches Hat Strainer Flow Direction
Witches hat strainers can be installed in two ways.
One is the tip of the cone strainer can be installed downstream (downstream), and the other is installed upstream (upstream).

Two factors influence the choice of installation method.
One is the accommodation space of the pipeline filtration system. In which direction is there enough space to install the temporary filter.
The other is the preferred flow direction set according to the working conditions.

1. Downstream installation
As shown in the figure, the temporary filter is installed with the cone pointing downstream. In this installation, debris will be captured by the tip of the filter. However, the center of the pipe is subject to higher velocity, and the velocity difference will cause particles to accumulate in the center. This may cause the cone filter to tear.
Recommendation: If installed downstream, reinforce the filter to ensure mechanical stability.

2. Counter-flow installation
As shown in the figure, the temporary filter is installed with the cone pointing upstream. Debris is swept to one side of the filter and particles accumulate inward on the outside of the pipe. This installation is more suitable for high flow rates and is more common.

Installation Tips
To ensure the correct installation of a witches hat strainer, consider the following tips:
▪ Follow Manufacturer Instructions: Always adhere to the manufacturer’s guidelines for installation, as different designs may have specific requirements.
▪ Check the Flow Arrow: Many witches hat strainers have an arrow indicating the correct flow direction. Ensure this arrow points in the direction of the fluid flow.
▪ Regular Inspections: After installation, regularly inspect the strainer to ensure it is functioning correctly and that no debris is bypassing the filtration process.

Proper installation and regular maintenance are key to ensuring your witches hat strainer operates effectively, keeping your plumbing system clean and running smoothly.
